Hello! Thank you for taking an interest in Lemniscate. This is the first post of our blog, and we would like to explain of how this project developed, what we are currently working on, and where we might like to go in the future. We hope that you will continue to engage with our work and become a part of our community.
Lemniscate began as a project idea developed by two high schoolers. We wanted to a program that encouraged young people to develop ideas for social change. As we were brainstorming ideas, we realized that there were very few resources and sources of information about neurodiversity created by neurodivergent people. Many neurodivergent people are forced to mask their personalities in order to obtain social acceptance, which leads to negative mental health outcomes. We wanted to address this issue by creating a platform to elevate neurodivergent voices.
We selected the name Lemniscate for our project because this is a mathematical term that refers to a figure-eight shaped curve. This is a reference to the infinity symbol, which neurodivergent advocates developed in favor of the puzzle piece to represent autism acceptance. It signifies that autism is a natural variation in brain functioning rather than a set of symptoms to be threated. We selected this as a symbol for our project because it exemplifies the neurodivergent community having control over the way it is represented and acknowledges the importance of accepting neurodiversity.
At the moment, we are mainly focused on developing a blog and newsletter to build community connections and share resources and connections. This can include media recommendations, links to resources, and personal narratives. We hope to eventually collect and share stories and advice from our readers as well to highlight the range of experiences and perspectives in the neurodivergent community. In the future, we would like to expand our work based on feedback we receive and identified community needs.
